PR1440B1/2 Fuel Tank Sealant Buying Guide for Precision Aviation Repairs

PR1440 Class B1/2

When it comes to fuel tank sealing in aviation, precision matters. PR1440B1/2 from PPG Aerospace/PRC-DeSoto is a corrosion-inhibitive, manganese-dioxide-cured polysulfide sealant designed for integral sealing of fuel tanks and fuselages. Packaged in 100ml two-part kits, this sealant is engineered for consistent performance whether you’re doing factory assembly work, heavy maintenance, or precision field repairs.

PR1440 Class B meets MIL-S-8802 Class B test methods and has proven service in aviation environments. The B1/2 designation means the sealant has an application life of approximately 30 minutes at 77°F (25°C) and 50% relative humidity before it starts to cure, making it perfect for quick-turn sealing operations where precision placement is critical.

Designed for Aviation Fuel Tank Applications

PR1440B1/2 is for fillet sealing of fuel tanks and sealing of fuselage joints where fuel, moisture, and temperature cycling are expected. Once cured, the sealant retains excellent elastomeric properties even after prolonged exposure to jet fuel (JRF) and aviation gas (Avgas). Reliable sealing at this stage supports faster turnarounds and helps ground crews get the most from their aircraft ground support equipment in mission readiness.

This high-performance sealant adheres to common aircraft substrates, including anodized aluminum, alodined aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and coated surfaces. It remains flexible down to -65°F (-54°C) and can be used continuously up to 250°F (121°C) and up to 275°F (135°C) for short-term use. It also resists hydrocarbon fuels, water, alcohols, petroleum-based and synthetic lubricating oils, and hydraulic fluids.

Mixing, Application, and Cure Profile

Each PR1440B1/2 fuel tank sealer kit includes Part A (black) and Part B (off-white) components that must be mixed at a 10:100 weight ratio. These are already pre-weighed, so you don’t have to worry about getting them wrong.

The mixed material is dark gray and has a thixotropic paste consistency for application with an extrusion gun or a spatula. B1/2 work life: 30 minutes at 77°F (25°C), 50% RH—tack-free time: less than 10 hours. Cure to 35A durometer hardness: 30 hours at standard conditions. For best adhesion results, PPG Aerospace recommends priming substrates with PR-148 Adhesion Promoter when working with stainless steel and titanium, followed by solvent cleaning with fresh, lint-free cloths before applying the sealant, especially when sealing around critical rotable aircraft parts and components.

Safety and Handling

While PR1440B1/2 is safe to use in industrial settings, both Part A and Part B are classified as hazardous materials under OSHA HCS (29 CFR 1910.1200). Part A hazards: harmful if swallowed or inhaled, suspected carcinogen, suspected reproductive toxin, and organ damage from prolonged exposure (brain). Contains manganese dioxide, carbon black, and other regulated materials. Part B hazards: suspected carcinogen, suspected reproductive toxin, and may release formaldehyde above 0.5 ppm under certain conditions.

It contains calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, and trace amounts of toluene. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or natural rubber/latex), safety glasses with side shields, protective clothing to avoid skin contact, and respiratory protection when ventilation is inadequate.

Handling precautions: use only in well-ventilated areas; avoid breathing vapors or dust; store in original sealed containers; keep above 41°F (5°C) and below 80°F (27°C); and follow all local and federal hazardous materials storage regulations.

Packaging and Shelf Life

The PR1440B1/2 100ml 5-Pack is designed for maintenance teams who need consistent, ready-to-use quantities without the waste of larger kits. Each 100ml kit has a shelf life of at least 9 months when stored below 80°F (27°C) in its original, unopened container. The small kit size is perfect for airline MRO facilities, SEMA aircraft sustainment programs, military maintenance depots, and field repair teams where space, weight, and waste minimization are important.
