DuPont Molykote 33: The Low Temp Grease for Aviation & Industry

Grease is the literal grease that keeps aircraft moving. There are numerous components on any given airplane or helicopter that rely on grease to operate correctly and smoothly. From the whole landing gear assembly (there are dozens of zerks on the landing gear to allow it to retract correctly) to flap and slat tracks, to jack screws and bellcranks, and all kinds of other things. 

Grease makes it happen, and DuPont Molykote 33 is a preferred low-temp grease for aircraft in areas that don’t need high-temperature grease. 

Low Temp Greases

DuPont Molykote 33 is the low-temp grease for metal-to-metal and metal-to-plastic friction in light load applications across a wide range of temperatures. Molykote 33 medium has good plastic and metal compatibility, low temperature characteristics, and good oxidation resistance.

On an aircraft, it is best suited for areas of the landing gear assembly that are not subjected to high heat, along with bell cranks, flap, and slat tracks, etc. It’s a silicone-based grease with a lithium thickener, stable and consistent performance across a wide range of temperatures. Off white in color, NLGI 2, suitable for industrial applications.

Molykote 33 for roller and conveyor equipment, control cables, and electric motors. On aircraft, the control cables usually have to be butter-lubricated with grease to keep their movement free and also to protect them from corrosion. 

While it is made for low-temp applications, Molykote 33 is acceptable for high-speed applications in industrial settings. It produces superior low-temperature characteristics and is even a good choice for optical equipment. 

Molykote 33 medium is used in solid lubricants, base oil viscosity, and temperature conditions for light load applications.

Physical and Chemical Properties

It is important to know the physical properties of Molykote 33:

  • Base oil viscosity 76 cSt @ 40°C, NLGI 2, medium consistency grease.
  • Temp range: -73°C to 180°C, for extreme low temperature applications.
  • Silicone-based grease with lithium thickener, good oxidation resistance, and corrosion protection.
  • Molykote 33 medium wide temp range for light load applications, industrial use.
  • Off-white in color, this product type is suitable for applications involving metal-to-metal and metal-to-plastic friction.
