In a 2022 statement, Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch anticipated record aircraft production for the year, despite ongoing supply chain disruptions due to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Much of the growing demand for Air Tractor aircraft is coming from South America, for both agricultural and firefighting use cases.

In 2022, the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) announced its intention to acquire up to 75 AT-802U Sky Warden aircraft. Air Tractor is slated to undertake the production of the airframes, subsequently undergoing modification into the Armed Overwatch mission configuration by L3Harris. 

These aircraft are earmarked for armed ISR missions, strategically designed for cost-effectiveness in permissive environments from austere locations. This procurement serves the dual purpose of replacing the aging U-28A Draco in combat service.

The Sky Warden is equipped to deploy precision-guided weapons, encompassing the APKWS rocket, GBU-12 laser-guided bomb, as well as Hellfire and Griffin missiles. With an impressive six-hour loiter time within a 200 nautical mile radius, these aircraft are engineered for sustained operational presence. 

The initial contract is valued at $170 million, with a procurement ceiling of $3 billion for the complete fleet. The operational plan outlines the formation of five squadrons, each comprising 15 planes, ensuring a constant deployment cycle, sustainment rotation, and dedicated training squadron. Anticipated service entry is projected for 2026, with the full fleet achieving operational capability by 2029. The AT-802U is poised to play a pivotal role in USSOCOM's specialized operations.
