PR1440B2 Sealant by PPG Aerospace: A Buyer’s Guide

Sealants are one of the unsung heroes of aircraft maintenance. Used in critical areas all over the aircraft, such as antennas, windshields, and especially fuel tanks, sealants are used to make a seal on common aircraft substrates. A resilient sealant with excellent elastomeric properties plays a crucial role in making a reliable aircraft, and a cured sealant is one of the top preventers of corrosion and water seepage on an airplane.

Greenwood Aerospace is proud to supply PPG Aerospace B2 sealant from the manufacturer to you. We handle shipping and guarantee you will be satisfied with the products we provide! Now, let’s learn more about PPG B2 sealant.

1. B2 Sealant Properties

Let’s talk about the specifics of B2 sealant properties. It is a low-sag Class B sealant that is designed for prolonged exposure to harsh elements and provides excellent adhesion properties to the aircraft fuselage, panels, fuel tanks, etc. It is a fantastic option for sealing aviation gas when a broad service temperature range is required for fillet sealing, fuselage sealing, and fuel tank sealing.

PR-1440 Class B is a high-performance aircraft fuel tank sealant made by PRC-DeSoto International, Inc. This two-part, manganese dioxide-cured polysulfide compound is designed for sealing integral fuel tanks and other critical fuselage applications. It withstands harsh aerospace environments and has superior fuel resistance and long-term flexibility.

For Demanding Aerospace Conditions

PR-1440 Class B operates in a temperature range of -65°F to 250°F with intermittent exposure up to 275°F. The cured form has excellent elastomeric properties even after prolonged contact with jet fuel and aviation gasoline. Perfect for military and commercial aviation applications where performance under pressure is non-negotiable.

Easy to Apply and Fast Curing

The sealant is a thixotropic paste and can be applied with an extrusion gun or a spatula. Cures at room temperature and is available in two work-life options:

  • B-1/2: 30-hour full cure with ½-hour application life
  • B-2: 48-hour full cure with 2-hour application life

High Strength and Durability

Once cured, PR-1440 Class B has:

  • Tensile strength: Up to 400 psi
  • Elongation: Up to 363%
  • Hardness: Durometer A rating of 50

Peel strength remains high on common aircraft substrates such as anodized aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and Alclad even after fuel immersion.

PR1440B2 is Built to Withstand Harsh Conditions

This sealant is designed for extreme durability:

  • Excellent resistance to hydrocarbons, water, alcohols, and synthetic/petroleum lubricants
  • No cracking at -65°F
  • Minimal deformation under 10 psi pressure
  • No corrosion, softening, or adhesion loss after 20-day salt/fuel immersion testing

Application and Storage Guidelines

Surface preparation is key to adhesion. Substrates must be clean, dry, and solvent-wiped with lint-free cloths. PR-1440 Class B must be mixed thoroughly before use and applied according to instructions. Has a 9-month shelf life when stored in unopened containers below 80°F.

Safety and Compliance

Always use as directed and read the SDS for handling and first aid. Meets MIL-S-8802, Class B.

2. Top Applications

B2 sealant is used all over the aircraft for sealing all kinds of aerodynamic items and fairings. Here are the most common uses for B2 sealant:

  1. Fuel tanks: it is designed to seal fuel tanks in commercial and military aircraft, resisting fuel immersion without losing integrity.
  1. Fuselage joints: B2 sealant seals fuselage structures where strength and flexibility are important.
  1. Wing sealing: Class B sealants prevent fluid and air ingress at joints and seams in the wing structures.
  1. Access panels are used around removable panels and fasteners where tight environmental seals are required.

3. Handling and Storage

Like all sealants, B2 sealant should be kept in a HAZMAT locker with the SDS on hand, below 80°F (27°C), and keep the containers tightly sealed. Mix thoroughly per the attached instructions until the mixed color is uniform. An incomplete mixture will lead to compromised performance, and the project will have to be redone.

B2 is compatible with spatulas, extrusion tools, and other extrusion equipment, and can also be spread directly from the tube.

Be sure to keep tabs on the expiration dates, as the shelf life is nine months. Tubes that have exceeded their shelf life must be discarded, so be sure to keep a close eye on them.

4. Best Practices

There are a few best practices that will yield you the best results with your sealant application.

First, surface prep is mandatory. Always degrease and solvent wipe the area. Isopropyl alcohol is a great option since it evaporates completely. Once it is mixed, B2 sealant has a two-hour application life, so make sure to apply it within this timeframe.

Always use the right tools to smooth it out, although the elastomeric nature of B2 usually yields smooth results with minimal tooling. Also, make sure the cure conditions are by the instructions stated on the packaging. This might require you to bring the aircraft into a climate-controlled hangar to seal correctly.

Finally, always inspect the finished product for uniform adhesion and cure quality before signing off that Red X.
