Durability Meets Versatility: A Guide to 3M 8663, 8681HS, and 8658DI Polyurethane Protective Tapes

Every single airplane relies on hundreds to thousands of parts behind the scenes that you will never think about. Never, unless you are a technician, supply specialist, or procurement specialist, that is. When you need polyurethane protective tape, accept no exceptions to 3M, one of the best-known names in the business, and Greenwood Aerospace is your preferred partner for federal agencies and military service branches to procure 3M polyurethane protective tapes for your aviation maintenance and operations units.

You can reach out to Greenwood Aerospace at gsasales@greenwood.aero or call us at 580-865-6000 or 833-GSA-EBUY (833-472-3289) for all of your 3M polyurethane tape needs! Now, let’s take a look at their line of products.

The Role of Polyurethane Protective Tapes in Aerospace and Defense

Of all the unseen yet indispensable tools on any aircraft, polyurethane protective tapes are definitely among the least likely candidates for hero status. Yet, they are extremely important. They are designed to protect critical components and structures from abrasion, impact, ultraviolet light, and fluids. These tapes extend the life of aircraft components by providing a protective barrier on leading edges, seams, floorboards, fairings, and numerous other surfaces both inside and outside the aircraft.

The unique feature of polyurethane tapes is their balance of toughness and durability. Unlike other coverings that become brittle, poly aircraft tapes can elongate under stress while still maintaining adhesive properties. They also resist erosion from rain, sand, and other debris while also retaining a strong resistance to fuel, hydraulic fluid, and other chemicals.

3M 8663 Polyurethane Tapes: The Go-To for Transparent and Matte Black Protection

The 3M Polyurethane Protective Tape 8663 series is comprised of exceptionally tough, abrasion-resistant elastomers. It is engineered for puncture resistance, resistance to tearing, erosion, and again, UV light, which wreaks havoc on so many coatings and tapes. The 8663 family of tapes is available in transparent films and matte-black low-energy variants designed for low-surface-energy substrates.

Key properties include:

  • Thickness: Approximately 0.018 inches (0.46 mm) total.

  • Strength and flexibility: Tensile strength of 117 lb./in. with 500% elongation, allowing it to flex without failing.

  • Adhesion: Strong peel adhesion across bare aluminum, enamel paint, and plastics.

  • Service temperature: Withstands continuous service up to 180°F (82°C).

8663 tapes can also be painted, if you need the color scheme to be seamless. Also, a dual-liner option (3M 8663DL) adds rigidity during applications, which is helpful for precise installations and large-area applications.

3M 8663HS Matte Black LE Tape

The 3M 8663HS tape features a matte black finish and is well-suited for applications that benefit from it. It has a UV-resistant formulation that helps maintain appearance even in harsh, sunny environments.

3M 8663DI, 8663DL24, and 8663DL Transparent Films

Transparent 8663 films are great for protecting surfaces without altering their appearance. They are widely applied over painted surfaces, leading edges, and seams where clarity is important. The dual-liner versions provide additional handling before large-format installation and provide a smooth, wrinkle-free finish where applied.

3M 8681HS Polyurethane Tapes: Heavy-Duty Transparent Protection

Some mission profiles and maintenance tasks require more protection from the elements than others, and the 3M 8681HS Poly Tape is up to the task. Made from a similar abrasion-resistant elastomer as their other products, it is designed for use in areas exposed to high levels of erosion and impact.

Highlights include:

  • Thickness: About 0.014 inches (0.36 mm) total, slightly thinner than 8663 but engineered for heavy duty.

  • Durability: Superior resistance to puncture, abrasion, and erosion, plus excellent UV stability.

  • Adhesion: High peel adhesion values — 135 oz/in on bare aluminum, and adequate bonding to epoxy primers and topcoats.

  • Service temperature: Rated up to 180°F (82°C).

This tape is available in transparent matte or gray finishes and is paintable in any color scheme you want. It is an excellent option for protecting helicopter rotor blades, wing and stabilizer leading edges, or any other surface exposed to rain erosion or debris impact.

3M 8658DI Polyurethane Tape: Flame Retardant Protection

For areas of your fleet that require fire-resistant tape, 3M Polyurethane Protective Tape 8658DI is exactly what you need, and Greenwood Aerospace has it in stock. Formulated to meet 14 CFR 25.853 (a) burn resistance, it is a go-to choice for interior jobs like floor panel seams.

Here are some of the most important characteristics of 3M 8658DI:

Thickness: 0.009 inches (0.23 mm).

Performance: Tensile strength of 34 lb./in. with 500% elongation, ensuring flexibility while maintaining integrity.

Peel adhesion: Strong values across bare aluminum and Boeing floor panel substrates, so you can guarantee dependable bonding.

Flame resistance: Passes 12-second vertical burn testing.

Service temperature: Rated up to 180°F (82°C).

The 8658DI is provided in a dual liner format, making the application straightforward. Beyond flame resistance, it is also an effective barrier against fluids, protecting floors (and, under the floor, rigging).

Choosing the Right Polyurethane Tape for Your Mission

Choosing the right protective tape for your fleet is important, but each is designed for a different purpose.

  • The 8663 series of tape is excellent for exterior protection and is available in matte black or transparent. It is paintable, so you can tailor it for your paint scheme.
  • 8681HS is great for heavy-duty environments such as rotorcraft, where rotor leading edges are prone to debris impacts. It is also a great option for fixed-wing leading edges.
  • 8658DI tape is a purpose-built polyurethane. Tape made specifically for flame resistance, and to provide a fluid barrier protection for cabin floor assemblies. 8658DI tape is a purpose-built polyurethane tape designed for flame resistance and to provide fluid-barrier protection for the cabin floor assembly.

Procurement teams can also weigh handling options like dual liners and the required widths, which range from half an inch to 48 inches, depending on the series, in terms of compatibility with paints and primers.
