Sprayable Corrosion-Inhibiting Sealants: A Guide to PR-1436-GPT for Federal and Military Maintenance

This guide continues our federal aviation and defense sustainment series, following prior articles reviewing Mastinox and CA-Series jointing compounds.

Sprayable corrosion-inhibiting sealants are another vital chemical sealant in the overall puzzle of aircraft maintenance. It is commonly used for internal airframe cavities, structural bays, and fuel tank structures, where brush application is impractical.

PPG PR-1436-G enables high-coverage corrosion control in complex geometric locations, which is yet another part of the overall aircraft sustainment puzzle. Aircraft all across the military and even federal agencies like the Civil Air Patrol, FBI, CBP, NOAA, and the FAA, to name a few.

What is PR-1436GPT?

PR-1436-G is a two-part spray-on sealant made using a polysulfide that's cured with dichromate. It's designed for use in spray applications. It cures quickly at room temperature and produces a tough, flexible seal that adheres well to aluminum and other metals, and it is MIL-PRF-81733 Type III-1 compliant.

Performance & Environmental Properties

PR-1436-G endures extreme temperatures; it can handle anything between-65° and 225°F and can even cope with temperatures of up to 250°F from time to time. And to make life even easier for you, it will still perform well after being exposed to Jet A fuel at 140°F. In fact, it only lost 6% of its weight.

What's more, it will still stick to what it's sealed to after a bath in Skydrol 500 Hydraulic fluid at 120°F. PR-1436-G offers exceptional temperature resistance, performing reliably between -65°F and 225°F, and even tolerating occasional spikes up to 250°F. Its durability is further demonstrated by its minimal 6% weight loss after exposure to Jet A fuel at 140°F. Furthermore, PR-1436-G maintains its adhesive properties even after immersion in Skydrol 500 Hydraulic fluid at 120°F.

Application & Cure

PR-1436-GPT is a two-part system that is fungus and rot-resistant and exhibits excellent levels of repairability for both freshly cured and fuel-aged fillets. Part B of the mixture must be fully re-suspended before mixing and shaken using a paint shaker. For spraying applications, the mixed material may be thinned 20-30% by volume with a 50/50 MEK/toluene blend. The sealant is compatible with pressure-pot spray gear and Semco cartridges.

All surfaces must be cleaned with solvents immediately before application using lint-free cloths conforming to AMS 3819. Movement of air past the surfaces after application helps remove solvents and speeds cure times.

Military and Federal Aircraft Usage

PR-1436-G is designed for fuel tank cavities and wet wing structures, surely among the most demanding parts of any aircraft. These areas include hidden aluminum-skin and rib/stringer interfaces, as well as dissimilar-metal joints in sealed cavities. This product is best suited for depot-level maintenance where major components are removed, and the fuel systems are most accessible.

When aircraft components must withstand harsh environments, the PR1436GPT sealant delivers. Rated for service from –65 °F to 225 °F (with short excursions up to 250 °F), it’s engineered as a two-part, sprayable corrosion-inhibitive barrier for aluminum alloys and dissimilar-metal joints.
