PR1440B2 Fuel Tank Sealant: 6 oz Kits

Greenwood Aerospace is no stranger to aircraft maintenance and the requirements that keep a fleet airborne. We own a fleet of aircraft used for firefighting and support numerous fleets, and these aircraft all require maintenance.

One area that consistently requires attention on all aircraft for leaks is the fuel tanks and fuel cells. These areas are constantly filled with expanding fuel, going through extreme temperature differences in minutes, and experiencing all the other rigors of flying. Using the proper sealant is a matter of life and death.

PPG is one of the most prominent manufacturers of fuel tank sealant, and PR 1440 Class B is the go-to for mission-essential maintenance operations. Let’s take a look.

Aerospace Sealants You Can Trust

Regarding maintenance, especially fuel tanks, safety starts with the seal. Seams, rivets, panels, and fasteners that require sealing have to use a sealant that you can count on to protect from fuel leaks, corrosion, and environmental extremes.

Detailed view

PR 1440 Class B2 by PPG Aerospace is an industry staple for fuel tanks and fuselage sealing applications.

PR 1440B2 is a two-art manganese dioxide-cured polysulfide sealant, engineered to protect critical components and systems and keep fuel in the cells and tanks. Class B sealants are commonly used in commercial and military fleets and are a mainstay of aircraft maintenance supply points and backshops everywhere.

Product Properties and Specs

Based on the TDS, here’s a detailed breakdown of the technical and performance properties of PR1440B2:

  • Service Temperature:
    -65°F (-54°C) to 250°F (121°C), with intermittent spikes to 275°F (135°C)

  • Application Life (B2 formula):
    2 hours at 77°F (25°C), 50% RH

  • Tack-Free Time:
    <36 hours
Full Cure Time (35A Durometer): ~48 hours

  • Cured Specific Gravity:
    1.57

  • Hardness (Durometer A):
    50 after full cure

  • Elongation:
    363% after standard cure
Retains flexibility even after fuel immersion and heat cycling

  • Tensile Strength:
    300 psi (standard)
200–400 psi after immersion and thermal exposure

  • Peel Strength:
25–36 pli depending on substrate (e.g., alodine aluminum, anodized aluminum, titanium)

  • Fluid Resistance:
Excellent resistance to jet fuel, aviation gas, water, alcohols, synthetic lubricants, and hydraulic fluids

  • Fungus Resistance:
    Non-nutrient formulation

  • Low Temp Flexibility:
Maintains adhesion and flexibility at -65°F

  • Thermal Rupture Resistance:
Retains 10 psi with negligible deformation, even after JRF exposure

Applications and Uses

The primary use of PR1440B2 is fillet sealing of integral fuel tanks. It is not limited to fuel tanks; it can be used all over the aircraft to seal panels, fairings, and other aerodynamic components (sensor pods, external fuel tanks, and so on). PR 1440B2 is compatible with extrusion guns, brushes, or spatulas like most Class B sealants.

It is a great solution for the following areas of the aircraft:

  • Wing and center fuel tank seams.
  • Fuselage panel overlaps when they are required to be sealed.
  • Access panels and other assorted assemblies.
  • Fastener heads exposed to fuel.
  • Situations where a void needs to be filled.

PPG PR1440B2 Benefits

PPG’s PR series of sealants, including PR 1440B2, is widely known in aerospace maintenance for its balance, ease of use, and adaptability to several standard methods.

PR1440B2 stands out from the crowd for a few good reasons.

The first is leak-free durability. It helps prevent fuel migration and vapor leaks, keeping your aircraft operating optimally, reliably, and, most importantly, safely.

It also exhibits high adhesion strength, which bonds reliably to many common substrates, such as aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium.

PR 1440B2 maintains structural integrity up to 250°F, allowing it to be used across the aircraft in various areas and applications. It also cures at room temperature, so that the plane can be kept in a climate-controlled hangar.

Finally, it is fuel-resistant and tested under JRF exposure, with excellent retention of flexibility and sealing strength while submerged in fuel.

Fuel Tank Maintenance

Fuel tank maintenance is always a mission-critical maintenance issue; fuel leaks are an instant red X. PR1440B2 gives you the peace of mind of a durable, flexible, and chemically resistant barrier engineered to remain highly effective under stress.

Here’s why it is trusted throughout aviation, whether military or commercial:

  • Flexibility after cure: it won’t crack, check, or delaminate after exposure down to -65°F or prolonged exposure to jet fuel.
  • It resists thermal rupture and retains pressure at 10 psi with minimal deformation.
  • PR1440B2 is tested to withstand a 20-day saltwater/JRF immersion without adhesion loss or blistering.
  • PPG PR1440B2 provides long-term adhesion and peel strength, even after thermal cycling and complete fuel immersion.
  • It is also easy to apply in the field. Every packet comes with a spatula so that you can apply it anywhere.

PPG PR1440B2 in 6 oz. Kits

PR1440B2 (and most other Class B sealants) are distributed in a 6-oz. kit, which is an excellent size for most jobs and not big enough to waste too much. Once it is mixed, it has to be used or tossed, and not every job requires that much sealant, so you want to minimize waste.

Each kit comes in a packet with pre-mixed Part A and Part B to produce a cured sealant suitable for brush sealing. It works great on common aircraft substrates. It exhibits excellent adhesion properties, and the thixotropic paste quality allows it to be applied even on the underside of the aircraft without running or dripping. It also has low sag material.

We have PR1440B2 in stock and ready to ship for sealing fuel tanks at a fair price, no matter what quantity you need.
