Corrosion Prevention in Military Aircraft Fleets by PPG

Preventing corrosion is a top priority for aircraft and defense assets that operate in harsh environments, such as areas where they get exposed to salt, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. The jointing compound's role in preventing corrosion of aluminium alloys and between dissimilar metals is particularly important at fastener, seam, and structural interface joints.

Mastinox CA1000 and CA1010 jointing compounds have been designed to support GSA procurement and depot readiness with their non-chromate corrosion-inhibitive formulations. These materials serve as modern replacements for older chromate-based corrosion-inhibiting compounds and provide long-term protection in aircraft fuel environments, including both jet fuel and aviation gas. This makes them essential for any Federal and military maintenance operations.

A Closer Look at Mastinox CA1000 & CA1010 Jointing Compounds

CA 1000 is a one-part epoxy-capped PERMAPOL polysulfide compound, while CA 1010 uses a one-part polyester compound chemistry. Both are non-curing, non-chromate corrosion-inhibitive materials designed to work on aluminum alloys or between dissimilar metals. The material acts as an effective barrier against the common causes of corrosion in an aircraft fuel environment, with a shelf life of at least 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored below 27°C (80°F) in original unopened containers.

Each material is a thixotropic paste suitable for application with a brush or spatula, so it's easy to apply across a wide range of field conditions without mixing. The compound remains permanently mastic after prolonged exposure to aircraft fuels, including both jet fuel and aviation gas, and continues to protect against corrosion.

How They Work and the Benefits of These Compounds

Both compounds remain permanently mastic after prolonged exposure to fuels, including both jet fuel and aviation gas, ensuring continuous corrosion protection over the years. The thixotropic paste formulation makes them easy to apply by brush or spatula in the field, even under challenging depot and flight-line conditions.

The non-curing, one-part epoxy-capped chemistry maintains flexibility and fuel resistance over time, which helps prevent galvanic and environmental corrosion in aluminum alloys and mixed-metal structures. These PPG products are designed to provide long-term corrosion control in critical aircraft joints and faying surfaces.

How Well Do They Withstand Extreme Temperatures?

CA1000 has a service temperature range from -65°F (-54°C) to 240°F (116°C), with intermittent excursions up to 275°F (135°C). CA1010 can be used in temperatures from -54°C to 320°F (-65°F to 160°C). Both compounds remain mastic even when cycled through extreme temperatures and continued exposure to aircraft fuels.

CA1000 vs CA1010: A Comparison of the Two

Always follow OEM specifications, applicable military technical data, and technical orders before using any of these products.

Using PPG for Corrosion Control in Military Aviation Maintenance

PPG CA1000 and PPG CA1010 are specially designed for use in Aerospace and Defense fuel system maintenance and airframe assembly operations. They protect fastener interfaces, seams, and surfaces exposed to aircraft fuels, including both jet fuel and aviation gas. They are used everywhere, from depot-level repair shops to MROs, AOGs, and flight-line maintenance.

The paste, suitable for application with a brush or spatula, is pretty handy: you can apply it with ease in all sorts of maintenance situations. It acts as an effective barrier against common causes of corrosion, and, on top of that, both products remain permanently flexible without cracking under prolonged exposure to fuel and environmental stress.

Final Thoughts

Mastinox CA1000 and CA1010 jointing compounds are reliable, non-chromate options that provide corrosion-inhibitive protection in those tough aircraft fuel system and airframe applications. The material acts as an effective barrier to prevent corrosion on aluminium alloys and dissimilar metals, making it perfect for programs seeking a modern, low-hazard, chromate-free option that's easy to use.
