Lycoming Exchange Engines: How Agencies Keep Fleets Operational Efficiently

Textron Lycoming makes one of the most prolific engines in the world. Thousands of new aircraft have rolled off the assembly line with a Lycoming under the cowling, and thousands more are rebuilt or overhauled and serving in operational fleets worldwide.

Flying with a Lycoming gives you peace of mind that you are using the industry standard engine brand. While most federally owned aircraft operate piston engines, a few hundred piston-powered aircraft are still in use by agencies like the FBI, the Department of Interior, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and probably a few others that are quiet about their aviation assets.

Benefits of Lycoming Exchange Engines

The Lycoming O-360 series of engines is one of the most common piston aircraft engines ever built, powering the bulk of the Cessna Skyhawk fleet of aircraft. They are extremely reliable, but all engines have a point when they must be rebuilt or replaced.

The thing is, when it is a fleet aircraft and mission capability rates matter, rebuilding the engine on the aircraft is not always a viable option. The shop visit might take months of turnaround time to get your engine back out the door, and even then, it still has to be installed on the aircraft.

And months might be optimistic. The best way to reduce downtime and increase operational efficiency is to use professionally rebuilt, overhauled exchange engines from the Lycoming factory team.

When you do this, you speed up the process by months. Your current engine is a core that you can remove and send to the Lycoming factory. In exchange, you will be refunded a portion of the new purchase price as a core charge.

Engine Exchange and Overhaul Process

Working through GSA Advantage is not an exchange program per se, but it amounts to one in the end. Here’s how it works:

First, you need to determine what engine model you need to replace. This needs to be very specific, so ensure it is accurate.

The Lycoming factory team of experts follows a thorough and precise process to ensure that every engine overhaul meets the manufacturer’s standards. They are rebuilt to higher tolerances than third-party rebuild shops are held to, but the engine is also provided with a new logbook and entry of zero hours since overhaul, giving you a fresh start with your overhauled engine.

Lycoming overhauled exchange engines come with mandatory parts as per the latest revision of the manufacturer’s overhaul manual. All STCs are complied with, giving you what amounts to a brand new engine for about a third less than new. Of course, you can also buy new ones if you want.

Greenwood Aerospace Lycoming Engine Sales

Greenwood Aerospace sells new and factory-remanufactured Lycoming engines as an authorized Lycoming distributor. We can provide Lycoming’s factory inventory of new and remanufactured engines giving you access to many standard models of new and factory remanufactured engines.

Lycoming Engine Sales Options

Overhauled engines are an excellent choice for most airplanes; not many circumstances warrant a brand new engine rather than a rebuilt one, and factory remanufactured is even better.

When your agency aircraft are due for TBO, you can choose from our substantial list of Lycoming piston engines. We offer the most common models used on Cessna 172, Cessna 182, Cessna 206, and Cessna 210 aircraft.

Both options provide a zero-time engine with factory-fresh logbooks and zero time between overhauls (TBO). However, the biggest advantage, and one we have emphasized, is that you will eliminate the typical downtime associated with an overhauled engine rebuild.

We will quickly order and ship your engine, and then the refund will be applied once the core is received.

Greenwood Aerospace also offers an extensive catalog of aircraft fluids, lubricants, and adhesives. Check out our supplies for your aviation missions; with our price points, we know you’ll be back!
