Henkel Epoxy Adhesives Available Through GSA: Product Comparison for Aerospace Applications

One of the most widely used bonding chemicals in aviation maintenance is epoxy. Epoxies are two-part structural adhesives that harden to a point where they can often be sanded and painted. They are infinitely useful all over the airframe and are widely used for all kinds of repairs.

Henkel/Loctite is an industry leader (if not the industry leader) in aircraft-grade epoxies, and Greenwood Aerospace is proud to support your maintenance operations with a large section of the Henkel-Loctite catalog, including 19 Henkel epoxies for your daily ops.

Let’s take a look!

Reliable Structural Bonding for Aerospace & Military Applications

Not all epoxies are created equal, and not all industrial epoxies are aircraft-grade, although most aircraft-grade epoxies are more than sufficient for other industries with less rigorous atmospheric and environmental demands.

Epoxy adhesive selection matters in aerospace manufacturing, maintenance, and repair because of the nature of flying, particularly turbine and jet aircraft, which are routinely transiting between ground level and several miles in the air, while flexing, twisting, and absorbing ridiculous amounts of shock (landings).

Aerospace-grade, specification-compliant structural adhesives are mandatory for long-term reliability, safety, and performance. They must be approved by the OEM or other appropriate governing body (MIL-PRF, MIL-SPEC, etc). Unlike airframe-specific parts or components, consumable substances like film adhesives are broadly approved by manufacturers across a wide swath of their aircraft, but you still must check for approval.

GSA-Listed Henkel Epoxy Adhesives

EA 9309 Series Products: Structural Bonding & Composites

The EA 9309 Series from Henkel Loctite is a family of toughened, two-part epoxy paste adhesives for structural bonding in aerospace applications where peel strength, durability, and environmental resistance are key.

These adhesives are used to bond aluminum structures, composite parts, and mixed-substrate assemblies, where long-term reliability and resistance to moisture, fluids, and temperature cycling are required.

EA 9309NA (Quart Kits, Packs, EZ-Pak Formats)

EA 9309NA is a room-temperature-curing structural epoxy with exceptional peel strength on aluminum, making it ideal for aircraft structures subject to vibration and fatigue loading. According to the data sheet, EA 9309NA has strong tensile lap shear strength on phosphoric acid-anodized aluminum and the flexibility to reduce stress concentrations at the bond line.

It is resistant to water, salt spray, and common aviation fluids and can be accelerated with moderate heat when needed for production or repair schedules.

EA 9309.3NA (50 g Packs and Quart Kits)

EA 9309.3NA is a variant of the EA 9309 family, offered in smaller package sizes for controlled applications, field repairs, and maintenance environments. It has the same toughened epoxy chemistry and structural bonding performance as EA 9309NA, with handling characteristics suitable for precise bond lines and smaller assemblies. Like the standard NA variant, it’s for bonding metals and composites where peel resistance, durability, and environmental performance are critical.

EA 9394 Series Products: High-Strength Paste Adhesives

EA 9394 AERO-series epoxies are purpose-built for gap filling, vertical surfaces, and many other structural repairs that demand excellent compressive strength.

The EA 9394 Series from Henkel Loctite is a two-part, thixotropic epoxy paste adhesive designed for aerospace applications requiring high compressive strength, gap-filling, and high-temperature performance. EA 9394 cures at room temperature and retains structural strength up to 350°F (177°C), perfect for structural repairs and bonded assemblies.

The paste's consistency allows for controlled application to vertical surfaces, liquid-shim applications, and irregular bond lines without sagging. The formulation also supports potting and filling applications where dimensional stability and load-bearing are critical. EA 9394 is qualified to MMM-A-132, Type I, Class 3 for aerospace and military maintenance environments.

EA 9396 & EA 9396C-2 Products: Thick Bond Lines & Durability

The EA 9396 series of epoxies from Henkel Loctite is a line of two-part epoxy paste adhesives formulated for structural bonds, where bond-line thickness, surface variability, and environmental exposure must be accounted for.

EA 9496 cures at room temperatures and consistently delivers reliable mechanical performance across a wide service temperature range of -67°F to 350°F (-55°C to 177°C).

These adhesives are qualified to MMM-A-132, Type I, Class 3, which makes them well-suited for aerospace manufacturing, repairs, and surface repairs.

EA 9395 & EA 9891RP Products: Specialized Repair Applications

The EA 9395 and EA 9891RP epoxy systems from Henkel Loctite are designed for aerospace repair, maintenance, and rework where controlled application and material compatibility are key. EA 9395 is a non-metallic, thixotropic epoxy paste that cures at room temperature and offers strong mechanical and compressive properties up to 350°F (177°C), making it well-suited for potting, filling, fairing, and composite repairs where RAM/RAS applies.

EA 9891RP is an abrasion-resistant repair paste for localized repair tasks, with a predictable room-temperature cure and durability in fluid-exposed environments. Both products are available in quart kits for precise job-specific repairs with no excess material waste.

EA 960F Series Products: Flexible Structural Adhesives

EA 960F epoxies are two-part epoxy paste systems engineered for applications requiring controlled flexibility, rapid handling strength, and surface smoothing. EA 960F cures quickly at room temperature and is often used as a fairing and smoothing compound on exterior aircraft surfaces.

It is a substance that can be sanded and painted for finishing, to fill voids or other surface indentations, and does well on properly prepared aluminum substrates; it can be sanded or painted shortly after cure.

ECCOBOND CT 5047-2: Electrical & Potting Applications

ECCOBOND CT 5047-2 is a two-part, electrically conductive epoxy adhesive that is designed for aerospace purposes where electrical continuity, controlled cure, and thermal sensitivity are important. This epoxy is commonly used for potting, encapsulation, and electrical bonding when traditional soldering is impractical or substrates cannot tolerate high temperatures.

CT 5047-2 cures at room temperature or with moderate heat and has stable electrical performance from -40°C to +130°C. Low outgassing and consistent volume resistivity make it ideal for aerospace assemblies that require reliable electrical connections and environmental protection. Supplied in individual A/B units for application-specific use.

Key Specifications, Performance & Compliance Considerations

Across Henkel’s aerospace epoxy portfolio, product selection is based on service temperature limits, mechanical strength requirements, cure behavior, and environmental exposure. Structural adhesives like EA 9309NA, EA 9394, EA 9395, EA 9396 are designed to maintain meaningful load-bearing capability under thermal cycling, vibration, and long-term service conditions.

Paste systems provide strong gap-filling capacity and compressive strength, which is a good fit for irregular bone lines, potting, and repairs. Products like EA 960F are flexible and work well for surface finishes, while ECCOBOND 5047-2 is the only product on this list designed for electrically conductive bonding and encapsulation, where soldering is impractical.

Surface Preparation, Compatibility & Application Notes

Regardless of the formulation, adhesive performance is influenced almost entirely by how well the surface is prepared and by application discipline. Aerospace epoxy systems are designed to be bonded to clean, dry substrates. These include aluminum, composites, and mixed-material assemblies, being the most common.

Accurate mixing by weight ratios is absolutely critical for predictable cure and mechanical performance, which is why they are pre-measured to provide the exact chemical composition post-cure.

Pot life does vary by product and directly impacts batch size planning during maintenance or repairs. Most Henkel epoxies cure effectively at room temperature, so the aircraft will probably need to be towed into a hangar for curing if the outside temperature is significantly below or above room temperature.
