MASTINOX CA-Series: The Safer, Non-Curing Jointing Compound for DoD Aircraft Maintenance
Series Note: This article is the second in our government buyer’s series on corrosion-inhibiting jointing compounds and aerospace sealants. If you haven’t read the primary guide yet, start here: PPG Corrosion-Inhibiting Sealants & Jointing Compounds Buyer’s Guide
There is no shortage of expertise in the aviation wings of military and federal flight operations units. These are some of the most capable aviators and maintainers in the world, with vast knowledge built over decades of real-world experience in the world's worst environments. From the baking deserts of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, to the high, dusty mountain ranges of Afghanistan, and the muggy, tropical bases in the Pacific Rim, they have seen it all (not to mention special missions like Hurricane Hunters, firefighters, and more).
Our focus in this installment of the series is on connecting warfighters and federal procurement specialists with the PPG products they need.
The Purpose of This Guide
Greenwood Aerospace is deeply committed to providing the DoD and other federal government flight operations and maintenance teams with the things they need. From consumable materials like PPG corrosion-resistant and jointing compounds, to large components such as accessory drives, all of which are available (or will be available in the near future) on GSA Advantage through our GSA Schedule contract.
We strictly sell to federal government entities, including the DoD, although some of our products (namely disaster recovery items) are eligible for purchase by local, state, and tribal agencies through GSA Advantage.
MASTINOX CA-Series is widely used in the aviation industry and is designed to act as an effective barrier against the most common causes of corrosion on alloys and corrosion between dissimilar metal types. It is a key chemical protectant for aircraft assemblies exposed to humidity, high stress, and vibration.
CA1101 is resistant to most hydrocarbons and lubricating greases, so overgreased components will not compromise the non-chromate corrosion-inhibitive compounds from PPG.
While chromates are extremely effective, they are also highly toxic, hazardous compounds. Instead, PPG offers non-curing, non-chromate corrosion-inhibiting compounds that provide corrosion protection without using chromium-based chemicals, making it safer for workers and more environmentally compliant with modern regulations.
Overview of MASTINOX CA-Series
These non-chromate, non-curing jointing compounds are specifically designed to give long-term structural protection in the toughest of aerospace environments. They're just one-part pastes that spread easily with a brush or spatula, and once applied, they form a continuous barrier between faying surfaces, fasteners, and other joints that resists fuel. They're unique in that they stay 'mastic' even after you apply them, so they can flex & move with any vibrations, heat expansion & contraction or structural movement.
Both CA1000 and CA1010 deliver reliable results across extensive temperature ranges: from as low as minus 65 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 54 degrees Celsius) to high temperatures in airframe and engine compartments.
They still stick well and hold up after prolonged exposure to Jet fuel & Aviation gas. This means they help keep your aluminum and dissimilar-metal parts intact, even under extreme stress. With real-world lab tests backing these claims and demonstrating resistance to corrosion, humidity, and various aviation fluids, the Mastinox CA-series offers a long-lasting, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chromate-based moisture stoppers.
Key Technical Attributes
Applications & Use Cases
When should you use MASTINOX CA-Seires jointing compounds?
Aerospace & Defense Environments
The PPG products are approved by many of the biggest manufacturers in the industry, to include Dassault, Eurocopter, EADS, and Thomson, to name a few. Aluminum alloys are fairly hardy but they do have corrosive qualities if they are in contact with dissimilar metals. PPG curing non chromate jointing compounds help eliminate these problems.
When these metals come into contact, galvanic corrosion can occur if the wrong ingredients are present (namely, moisture, salt, and certain chemicals). Even intermittent excursions into saltwater environments can be all it takes for the right blend of electrolytes to exist; prolonged exposure to aircraft is even harder on the aircraft.
Application Method
A thixotropic paste suitable for application by brush or spatula, the CA-Series of products remains mastic; it does not crack, shrink, or cure solid. Because sometimes you do not want it to cure solid, it creates a long-term corrosion barrier for jet fuel and aviation gas environments.
