PRC DeSoto Aerospace Primer Guide: Non-Chrome, Super Koropon, and BMS10-79 Exterior Coatings

Continuing our series of articles on PPG Aerospace paint system components, today we're going to talk about the many different types of primers that PPG Aerospace offers.

Primer systems are an integral part of the paint process and the second step after corrosion inhibitors are applied. We also have an extensive catalog of corrosion inhibitors. PPG Aerospace produces primers that are well-suited for the interior and exterior. It has chromate and non-chrome. We carry several of them, and if you need what we don't have, we can probably get it. Greenwood Aerospace is here to deliver the exact specifications you need for your mission.

At-A-Glance: PRC DeSoto Epoxy Primer Lineup for Aluminum and Composite Surfaces

The PPG Aerospace/PRC DeSoto Primer lineup is a unified system of epoxy-based coatings designed for excellent corrosion protection, high adhesion, and long-term durability. Greenwood Aerospace offers these through GSA Advantage to ease the procurement process for you and help your bottom line.

These primers are designed to perform in interior, exterior, and non-chrome applications, which basically covers the entire spectrum of aircraft coating needs. It works on substrates ranging from structural aluminum to advanced composites, depending on the primer selected.

Key Features: Non-Chrome and Fluid-Resistant Epoxy Primer Options

512X310 urethane-compatible, chrome-free epoxy primer is made as a chrome-free system that delivers excellent corrosion protection for aluminum and composite structures.

Chrome-Free Corrosion Resistance

Chromium has been removed from the formula, so these chrome-free epoxy primers have eliminated many of the health, handling, and regulatory problems associated with traditional chromate coatings for decades. All the while, it retains compatibility with most standard aircraft, free treatments, and topcoat systems. It is compatible with Desothane HS polyurethane topcoats and other epoxy primers.

Both 512X310 and the conventional solids 515X349 exterior-grade primers are made as urethane-compatible epoxy coatings. These are practical drop-in alternatives when chromate-free or reduced-hazard primers are necessary, a trend the industry has been leaning towards for a long time due to the highly caustic nature of chromium paint systems.

Fluid Resistance & Interior Performance

515K011 Super Koropon is a conventional solids lead and cadmium-free epoxy primer made for the interior sections of aircraft. It is especially made for fluid-rich aircraft environments. Super Coro Pawn has an excellent resistance to Skydral and other aircraft hydraulic fluids and resists Avgas and jet fuel. And other aggressive fluids are commonly used on modern aircraft. It is the go-to choice for bays and interior zones that are chronically exposed to hydraulic fluid, jet fuel, and other solvents.

For the exterior structures of an aircraft, 515X349 exterior primer is a urethane-compatible epoxy film. It provides excellent adhesion to aluminum and composite surfaces. This is specifically made to protect aluminum substrates from corrosion.

Formulation Details: Two-Component Epoxy Coatings Formulated to Protect

The 515X349 exterior grade aircraft primer is supplied as a two-component A/B epoxy system. This combines a 515X349 base with a 910X533 activator, which are mixed at a 1:1 volume ratio.

It is allowed a specified induction time of 30 minutes. The system provides an 8-hour pot life at 21-25°C or 70-77°F. This is to provide consistent atomization, viscosity, and film build throughout a full shift for both gallon-spec kits.

Super Koropon 515K011 is a comparable two-component epoxy resin and curing agent that pairs the 515K011 base with a 910-012 activator, which is also mixed at a 1:1 volume ratio.

Each product is made with a specific protection envelope in mind.

512X310 is a chrome-free epoxy primer for corrosion resistance on composite surfaces and compatible aluminum assemblies. This item has a service temperature range from -54°C to 177°C or -65°F to 350°F.

515K011 is designed to protect interior craft structures from corrosion in environments exposed to Skydrol, jet fuel, hydraulic fluids, and other common fluids. This operates in the same temperature range as the above. 515X349 is a conventional‑solids, urethane‑compatible exterior epoxy coating formulated to protect aluminum substrates from corrosion, with excellent adhesion to composites, improved Skydrol resistance, difficult‑to‑strip chemistry, and a rated service temperature window of -54 °C to 177 °C.
