Selection Criteria for Aircraft Paint and Composite Prep
Not all surfaces are made equally. Standard sheet metal is prepared differently from composites, and a single aircraft MDS may use multiple paint types and processes across the airframe. For instance, most aircraft have a matte gray finish but high-gloss white areas, namely the landing gear and wheel wells.
The first rule of prep work is to match the abrasive to the substrate, not just the coating. Composite resin systems are much more sensitive than aluminum and can easily dig too deep and remove too much composite material if your grit is too coarse. With that in mind, select a pad or cleaner compatible with the manufacturer's resin, especially if you're working on bonded repairs, fairings, radomes, and non-metallic surfaces like carbon fiber and composite skins. Non-metallic pads are the safe default because they significantly reduce the risk of fiber damage, heat buildup, and contamination.

Hand Pads and Scotch-Brite Hand Options
Hand pads are best used for feathering, scuffing, blending, and light surface prep where control is the main issue. 3M's SCOTCH-BRITE Aerospace Hand Pads are great; they are non-woven, open-web abrasives that can be used wet or dry for sanding, polishing, finishing, and surface prep. They come in multiple grit levels, depending on the removal you need.
The 3M Scotch-Brite 7447 general-purpose pad is a very fine aluminum oxide abrasive and a superior alternative to steel wool, wire brushes, and sandpaper. These handy pads are tough options that make application easier while offering durability and excellent performance.
Aluminum Oxide Grades for Hand Pads
For aluminum oxide hand pads, the rule of thumb is to go from coarser to finer for heavier cleaning, to very fine for the final blend and finish work. Industry grit guidelines recommend 60-80 as a common starting point for coating prep, and 120-220 for finer finishing and minimal profiling.
For a final blended finish, very fine aluminum oxide is the safer choice as it removes less material and gives the technician more control over the surface profile. The Scotch-Brite 7447 is a very fine grade aluminum oxide pad, which is good for light scuffing and finishing.
Steel Wool, Alternatives, and Safety Considerations
Treat steel wool as a metal touch-up tool; it is not a default prep product for aircraft. It sheds fibers, rusts after use, and leaves fine metal splinters. This is why we suggest Scotch-Brite pads as a safer alternative: they don't do any of these things.

Brushes, Pad Holders, and Mechanical Tools
Brush stiffness needs to be matched to the task. Use stiffer brushes for primer removal or aggressive cleaning, and softer brushes for lighter scuffing and debris removal. The goal is to remove contamination without changing the base surface more than necessary.
Pad holders are worth the money and worth including because they let you distribute pressure more evenly, helping technicians maintain a consistent finish throughout the process. 3M's pad holder products help distribute pressure evenly across the pad surface and also make cleanup a little faster.
Scuff Materials and Long-Lasting Abrasives
For repeated use, we suggest non-woven hand pads and durable scuffing materials that resist shedding, rinse clean, and maintain consistent cutting. Scotch-Brite pads are conformable, durable, and well suited for aircraft surface preparation.
